BRANDON, MB – Brandon University (BU) is leading a new $5.2 million international partnership, including $2.5 million in federal grants, to strengthen the voices of rural and northern communities.
The Rural Policy Learning Commons (RPLC) will network scholars, politicians and citizens in a variety of ways including conferences, webinars and publications, to ensure that policy-makers are cognizant of the characteristics, unique benefits and challenges associated with rural and northern places.
Lidia Carvajal, institute coordinator, introduced the 2014 ICRPS in Toluca University. She challenged us to live the Mexico experience and equally important to reflect on this reality – both rural and urban, rich and poor.
A conference on Western Canadian Functional Food Ingredients: Strategies to Manage Costs & Enhance Products took place from June 11 – 12, 2014 at the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals in Winnipeg. Dr. Gillian Richards from RDI presented an overview of the industry: “Manitoba’s food processing sector – two paths to 2020”.
BRANDON, MB – New research from Brandon University (BU) may be an important first step in understanding the impact of a noxious weed, toxic to cattle and growing across millions of acres in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Dakotas.

Dr. Terence McGonigle, Department of Biology, and former BU student Jeremy Timmer (BSc 2010), studied leafy spurge and its effect on grasses growing in 40,000 hectares of sandy prairie around Shilo, MB. Their research has just been published by The Prairie Naturalist.
BRANDON, MB – Following an exhaustive cross-Canada search, the Brandon University (BU) Board of Governors takes great pride in announcing that Dr. Gervan Fearon begins a five year appointment as President and Vice-Chancellor, effective August 1st, 2014.

Currently the Vice-President (Academic and Provost), Dr. Fearon joined BU in 2013 as part of the senior executive team, developing and promoting academic programming and research advancement, and overseeing the University’s Faculties, Student and Registrarial Services, Library Services, and Information Technology Services.
Hundreds of students graduated today, May 30,2014 at Brandon University. Two of the four graduates of a Master of Rural Development have recently contributed to projects and activities at RDI – Immaculate Nabisere and Matt Grills.
