BRANDON, Man. – An internationally recognized Brandon University (BU) researcher in the area of Indigenous health and the law says she sees troubling trends in her ongoing study on the health of Indigenous inmates.

BRANDON, MB – Dr. Emma Varley, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology, has published “Abandonments, Solidarity and Logics of Care: Hospitals as Sites of Sectarian Conflict in Gilgit-Baltistan” in Culture, Medicine and Psychiatry: An International Journal of Cross-Cultural Health Research. The article, which focuses on healthcare delivery sites as conduits for the expression and enactment of Shia-Sunni sectarian conflict in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, represents nearly three years of ethnographic fieldwork and research.
BRANDON, MB – Two professors from Brandon University’s (BU) Faculty of Health Studies Psychiatric Nursing program have collaborated on a new book aimed at supporting caregivers in the mental health field. Supporting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Mental Illness, co-authored by Debra Dusome and John Simpson (retired), explores topics of interest to those that provide care for individuals with co-occurring intellectual disabilities and mental illness.
BRANDON, MB – A Brandon University (BU) researcher with an international reputation reconstructing the ancient world from plant fossils is returning to the field this summer thanks to support from the National Geographic Society. Dr. David Greenwood, a Professor of Environmental Science in BU’s Department of Biology, has been awarded US$14,483 by the Society’s Committee for Research and Exploration to cover costs of an expedition to southern British Columbia this summer.

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University (BU) students and researchers are set to display a collection of photographs that show unique interpretations of Aboriginal youth leadership in Success through Our Eyes: A Photovoice Exhibit. The exhibit is part of an overall youth success project to tell the story of First Nations, Métis and Inuit young people across Manitoba.
Blyss Pickering is a passionate advocate for nature and protecting the vital relationships between the urban and natural environments that surround us. She studies the ecological health of riparian forests around the City of Brandon, and is adding to both the social and scientific knowledge associated with municipal development in these areas.
Blyss tries to overcome her fear of frogs by holding one, if only for a moment.
