A Brandon University researcher known for his work on restoring peatlands is part of a team that has secured $1,466,449 in federal funding to look at polluted peatlands in northern Ontario.

Dr. Pete Whittington, Associate Professor of Geography & Environment at BU, joins Dr. Colin McCarter, Assistant Professor at Nipissing University and Canada Research Chair in Climate and Environmental Change, who was awarded an Alliance Missions Grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada announced this month.

Scientists will test restoration techniques at a large peatland site in southeastern Manitoba as part of a Brandon University (BU) project supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
The work will build upon and inform how existing Canadian-based restoration techniques could be adapted to the drier Manitoba climate.

A Brandon University faculty member will soon head to Estonia for his first meetings in his new role as chair of the Expert Group: Peatland Restoration, part of the International Peatland Society.
Dr. Pete Whittington, an Associate Professor of Geography and peatlands researcher at BU, was named to the position earlier this month.
