BRANDON – Dr. Bernadette Ardelli has been appointed as Dean of Science at Brandon University (BU). The BU Board of Governors has approved the appointment for a term of five years, beginning January 1, 2018.

Dr. Ardelli joined BU as an Assistant Professor in 2006, earning promotions to Associate Professor in 2012 and full Professor earlier this year. She served as Chair of the Department of Biology from July 1, 2014 until June 30, 2017.

“I am delighted to welcome Dr. Ardelli into this key leadership role. Her knowledge, experience and dedication will be of great benefit to her Faculty and the University as a whole,” says Dr. Meir Serfaty, BU’s Acting Vice-President (Academic & Provost). “The process of recruiting has been extensive as we have looked for the ideal person to lead our Faculty of Science into the future. I was very pleased to see a number of outstanding candidates, from right here at Brandon University, step forward and provide their own vision for the Faculty. I am very confident that great things will come as Dr. Ardelli works together with our wonderful group of faculty, staff and students.”

Dr. Bernadette Ardelli will begin a five-year term as Dean of Science on January 1, 2018.

After completing a Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University College of Cape Breton, Dr. Ardelli went on to earn a Master of Science and a PhD in Zoology from the University of Guelph. She was a Senior Researcher and Postdoctoral Fellow at McGill University’s Institute of Parasitology before joining BU.

Dr. Ardelli has taught or developed 15 courses at BU at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and has been a Principal Investigator or Co-Applicant for research that has generated about $1.2 million in funding since arriving in Brandon. She has been presented with the Brandon University Senate Award for Excellence in Research, the President’s Faculty Excellence Award, and her work has been recognized in the Globe and Mail’s Canadian University Report. She has also published extensively and contributed chapters to two books.

Among Dr. Ardelli’s priorities as Dean will be enhancing BU’s Science programming, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as supporting the University’s commitment to furthering Indigenous education.

“I am excited about this challenge. I’ve been in Biology, but I see a lot of connections throughout Science,” says Dr. Ardelli.

“We have great teachers and researchers, who are very dedicated, and I believe that by collaborating and sharing resources we can all benefit.”

Dr. Austin Gulliver has served as Acting Dean of Science since January 2016. When Dr. Ardelli assumes her new role, Dr. Gulliver will return full-time to his position as a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

“I am thrilled that Dr. Ardelli will be taking on this important role in the University, where she will usher in a new period of stable leadership for the Faculty of Science, and I wish to thank Dr. Gulliver for his valued contributions during this transition period,” says Dr. Steve Robinson, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor of BU. “He has overseen a period of great growth and development for our Faculty of Science, and I know that it will continue to flourish with the guidance of Dr. Ardelli.”
