BRANDON, MB – A unique community astronomy program at Brandon University (BU) is giving the public a rare, free opportunity to view amazing objects in the night sky through the largest telescope between Kenora and Calgary.
In the past three years, more than 4000 people have visited the BU Observatory, not only during warm July nights but also February chills, to peer through the eyepiece of the 16-inch reflecting telescope which can bring the rings of Saturn into clear view.

BRANDON, MB – An internationally-recognized voice in Indigenous health and the law at Brandon University (BU) is launching a new book today; an historical examination of Canadian legal regimes and their negative impacts on the health of Aboriginal peoples.
Dr. Yvonne Boyer, BU’s Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Health and Wellness, has written Moving Aboriginal Health Forward: Discarding Canada’s Legal Barriers, a comprehensive review of health statistical data, historical practices, and legal principles that have developed in Canadian law as they apply to Aboriginal peoples.

BRANDON, MB – A collection with more than 10,000 high definition maps is being moved into the John E. Robbins Library at Brandon University (BU), allowing for greater public access.
The John Langton Tyman Map Library contains atlases and topographic maps of Manitoba and Canada, as well as maps from around the world.

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University’s Faculty of Health Studies was recently bolstered by the donation of one hundred copies of a new work authored by one of Canada’s most celebrated internists. Gifted to BU by Chancellor Emeritus, Ryerson University, G. Raymond Chang and Donette Chin-Loy Chang, Dr. Herbert Ho Ping Kong’s The Art of Medicine: Healing and the Limits of Technology will provide students with insight into the core principles of Dr. Ho Ping Kong’s patient-centred approach to diagnosis and treatment.

“That is an old-school Electro Convulsive Therapy machine that they used in the former Brandon Mental Health Centre,” says the Brandon University alumna and newly-minted Master’s degree holder in Bioethics from McGill.

BRANDON, MB – One of Canada’s prominent family-owned companies is making the largest single private donation to-date to the Healthy Living Centre at Brandon University (BU), a gift which will reach $500,000 when fully realized by matching contributions from the community.
The Richardson Foundation – the giving arm of James Richardson & Sons, Limited and Affiliated Companies across Canada: Richardson International, Tundra Oil & Gas Limited, Richardson GMP Limited and Richardson Centre Limited – has donated $250,000 and has also pledged to match every dollar raised by BU in 2014 for the Healthy Living Centre (HLC), up to an additional $250,000. In recognition of this generous gift, the main gymnasium in the state-of-the-art HLC will be named Richardson Gymnasium.

A conference on Western Canadian Functional Food Ingredients: Strategies to Manage Costs & Enhance Products took place from June 11 – 12, 2014 at the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals in Winnipeg. Dr. Gillian Richards from RDI presented an overview of the industry: “Manitoba’s food processing sector – two paths to 2020”.

BRANDON, MB – A celebrated music student from Brandon University (BU) has been invited to perform and deliver a lecture at an international piano competition in Serbia later this month.
Luis Ramirez auditioned in April before an international panel of the World Piano Teachers Association (WPTA), and was selected to take part in the International Piano Competition in Novi Sad, Serbia.

BRANDON, MB – New research from Brandon University (BU) may be an important first step in understanding the impact of a noxious weed, toxic to cattle and growing across millions of acres in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Dakotas.

Dr. Terence McGonigle, Department of Biology, and former BU student Jeremy Timmer (BSc 2010), studied leafy spurge and its effect on grasses growing in 40,000 hectares of sandy prairie around Shilo, MB. Their research has just been published by The Prairie Naturalist.
