National beginning band composition competition launched at Brandon University

The Brandon University Student Music Educators Association (BUSMEA), in partnership with the Westman Band Directors Association (WMBDA), instrumental music teachers, and stakeholders in the Westman region, are proud to announce the launch of a national Beginning Band Composition Competition, with a submission deadline of Nov. 1, 2025.

This landmark initiative coincides with two major milestones for BUSMEA: the organization’s 40th anniversary and the 20th annual Da Capo Conference, hosted by the Brandon University School of Music.

Creating psychiatric nursing promo video opened eyes of student filmmakers

Two Brandon University psychiatric nursing students tasked with making a community health promotional video say they got as much out of the assignment as any viewer will.

“This project has changed the way I think about psychiatric nursing in many ways,” said third-year student Kim Harrison, adding that she hadn’t realized how little the general public understood about psychiatric nursing before starting a project to better explain it.

“I also realized that when working on a community project like this, there is no official end,” she said.

Supporters of Brandon University recognized at luncheon ceremony

Some of Brandon University’s most committed supporters were recognized with heartfelt praises at the annual BU Foundation luncheon last week.

Donors to the BU Foundation heard directly from students who had felt the impact of their support, as well as from BU breast cancer researcher Dr. Mousumi Majumder.

Residence applications open May 1

Fall applications to stay in one of the BU residences will open on May 1 for new students and the university expects spaces to move quickly.

Brandon University has three residences available: Darrach Hall (men inclusive); Flora Cowan (women inclusive) and McMaster Hall (all genders) each offer a unique community feel.

Scholarship recipients celebrated

Recipients of the Pallister Awards at Brandon University, supported by Brian & Esther Pallister, came together recently for a reception at the BU Healthy Living Centre.

For more than a quarter century, the couple has given to scholarships at the university, beginning with their gift in 1999 to BU’s Success in Mind Campaign, although their charitable giving to the BU Foundation actually began even earlier, in 1990.

Brandon University partners with Assiniboine College and Brandon Chamber on ConnectED conference for students and local industry

Brandon University and Assiniboine College partnered with the Brandon Chamber of Commerce for a conference-style event, ConnectED, that offered more than 100 students the opportunity to connect with local industry. Using a “speed dating” model, the half-day conference matched students with industry experts in their areas of interest, giving them dedicated facetime to ask career questions, gain insider tips and tricks, and build their personal networks.

Brandon University expert to focus on youth retention at Chamber keynote

A Brandon University expert on experiential education, professional networking, and launching youth into successful careers will take her message to Brandon’s business class at a Brandon Chamber of Commerce luncheon this month.

Cora Dupuis, Co-ordinator of BU’s Co-op Program, will deliver the keynote address at the Brandon Chamber’s February Luncheon, this Thursday, Feb. 20. It’s the first time in recent memory that a Brandon University faculty member has taken the stage as a keynote speaker at a Chamber luncheon.
