Breast Cancer Awareness Walk returns to BU

The second annual Brandon University (BU) Breast Cancer Awareness walk will take place over the noon hour on Friday, May 8, starting from the centre of the BU campus.

The walk is being organized by BU’s Breast Cancer Cell and Molecular Research Lab. Participants will gather in the Kavanagh Courtyard at noon, with breast cancer survivors (Elizabeth Glaseman, Michelle Gerrard, and Marcy Goetz) sharing their lived experiences. There will also be representatives of the Waves of Hope dragon boat team present. The group will set out for a walk around campus, with the event ending at about 1 p.m.

Last year’s inaugural walk drew a crowd of people from BU and the wider community, and cancer researcher Dr. Mousumi Majumder hopes participation will double this year.

“We were thrilled with the response we got from our community on short notice last year, and we expect attendance will grow with more awareness,” Dr. Majumder said. “It’s a disease that hits close to home for so many of us, and by working together we can succeed in our goal of saving lives.”

Dr. Majumder is BU’s Canada Research Chair in Genotoxicology and her research program aimed at early detection of breast cancer and development of therapeutics, has grown rapidly, earning national recognition and funding support. The latest supporters of the lab are the Waves of Hope team, who have launched a campaign to raise $150,000 in support of Dr. Majumder’s work.

Everyone is invited to Friday’s event. Participants are urged to wear pink to support the cause.
