March 2 update on BUFA call to strike

UPDATE: Posted jointly on behalf of lead negotiators Lisa Robson (BUFA) and Kristen Fisher (BU)

The below communication was misleading; a strike is not guaranteed. While the Faculty Association’s strike deadline remains, at this time Brandon University and the BU Faculty Association are very much still at the table and working hard to reach an agreement. Negotiations are scheduled to continue for tomorrow (Sunday) as well. We remain committed to negotiating a new collective agreement that is fair for all, including students.

We will continue to update you through the weekend.

_______________________

Brandon University has been informed that the BU Faculty Association has called for a strike to start as of Monday morning, March 4. We remain committed to negotiating a new collective agreement that is fair for all, including students, and we are still working to avoid this strike.

Brandon University will continue to meet with the Faculty Association throughout the weekend at the bargaining table. With daily negotiations over the past three weeks, we have been seeing good progress from both parties, and although we are disappointed in this decision, we remain optimistic.

At this time, we hope you will be able to come to campus on Monday for classes, study or work as normal. However, you should prepare for the possibility that classes, labs, and other educational activities will be suspended for a period of time.

If there is a strike, campus will remain open. Students and non-BUFA staff will continue to have full access to most facilities and amenities, with exceptions for some that may require faculty supervision, like labs. Non-BUFA staff should come to work on campus as normal. Students should consult the syllabus for each of their courses and continue to do readings or other coursework, as appropriate. However, in the case of a strike, classes themselves will be suspended.

Brandon University is separately negotiating with the Faculty Association on a strike protocol that will minimize disruption to critical areas, like animal-based research, perishable items, and required laboratory maintenance. When finalized, this agreement is expected to also address upcoming events, student employment, practicum placements, and travel. We will share detailed guidance for students and staff as it is developed.

Please note that we are also monitoring the Environment Canada blizzard warning, which may affect campus on Monday, regardless of any job action.

We will keep you informed through the rest of the weekend with any necessary updates through your BU email address. We thank you for your patience during this time.
