Brandon University (BU) students are choosing to challenge inequality to mark International Women’s Day on Monday, March 8.
International Women’s Day will kick off Women’s Week at BU as the university’s Status of Women Review Committee (SWRC) recognizes 17 outstanding female students as nominated by faculty and staff members. Profiles of the students appear on the BU website at BrandonU.ca/Womens-Week. The profiles include information about the students’ background, studies and goals. In keeping with the International Women’s Day theme of #ChooseToChallenge, each of the students also raises issues of gender bias, inequality or other social issues that they are passionate about.
“We’re thrilled to be able to recognize such an accomplished and inspiring group of women,” said SWRC Chair Candice Waddell. “We have students from six different countries who represent all five of our faculties. Some are mature students, and some are balancing their studies with full-time jobs or parenthood. They all bring something special to BU, and I believe they are all going on to great things in their careers and their communities after graduation.”

In past years SWRC has hosted a reception to acknowledge the students. While this is not possible this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Women’s Week celebration has been taken online, with students developing a social media campaign highlighting the award recipients, information about International Women’s Day and the #ChooseToChallenge theme, testimonials from students about the importance of International Women’s Day, and a feature on the Women’s Shelter and Women’s Resource Centre in Brandon.
“It was very important for us to continue the tradition by recognizing the amazing efforts of our students and keeping the spotlight on gender issues,” said Morganna Malyon, a member of SWRC and one of the Women’s Week organizers. “I’m glad to see people celebrating women and choosing to challenge inequity.”
