BU Research Committee awards $100,000 in funding

Brandon University (BU) researchers are exploring topics from underground artifacts to far-away galaxies thanks to more than $100,000 in BU Research Committee (BURC) funding.

BURC is providing $102,941 to support 27 projects during the 2019-20 period. Supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada as well as internal BU funds, BURC helps researchers get new ideas off the ground.

“Our faculty members have been very successful at attracting national Tri-Agency funding for their work based on the quality of research that they do,” says Dr. Heather Duncan, Chair of the BU Research Committee and Associate Vice-President of Research.

“The BURC funding allows us to invest in emerging research that is not yet on the radar of the federal agencies, developing it to the point that many projects go on to attract significant external funding.”

The 2019-20 projects supported by BURC will each receive between $1,100 and $5,000, broken into three categories. Research Grants are intended to help in the development of projects with the potential to earn external funding in the future. New Faculty Research Grants serve a similar purpose but are for faculty members who are in their first four years at BU and have not previously received BURC funding. Knowledge Mobilization Grants support dissemination of research findings to the research community, business, government, the media, and the broader public.

“We have a very diverse and supportive research community at Brandon University that helps new ideas flourish,” said Dr. Steve Robinson, Vice-President (Academic & Provost). “BURC grants are one way that we can help innovative built-in-Brandon research make a wide impact.”
