BRANDON, MB – Four graduating students from Brandon University (BU) have been awarded federal scholarships, given each year to top-ranking applicants furthering their educations in the sciences, social sciences and the humanities.
In total, $70,000 in scholarships from the Tri-Agency’s Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) will be split among the BU students.
“These awards go to the best and brightest across the nation,” says Dr. Gervan Fearon, Vice-President (Academics and Provost), “and our students are to be congratulated. Their success also speaks to the high quality of undergraduate education and the commitment to excellence of our faculty at BU.”
Julia Redfern captured the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship-Master’s, to investigate how sport fish, and vertebrates in general, react physiologically to chronic stress.
Three BU grads received the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship-Master’s:
Sylvia Kasper will document the complex experiences of Aboriginal and Métis gay and lesbian youth in Canada; Morganna Malyon is studying the role of the press in regulating abortion from 1840 to 1900 in an around Toronto; Brandy Robertson’s research paper is entitled Jane Austen’s Heroines: Why we still love them two hundred years later.
The CGS allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields.
