The Manitoba government is partnering with Brandon University to replace the Gulliver Astronomical Observatory’s telescope dome to ensure future generations can use Manitoba’s largest public telescope, Advanced Education and Training Minister Renée Cable and Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.

Family gift earmarked to replace protective dome

Brandon University’s observatory has a new name.

The rooftop facility, long a beacon for stargazers in western Manitoba, will now be known as the Gulliver Astronomical Observatory, following a generous $50,000 donation from the family of BU astronomy professor Dr. Austin Gulliver.

BRANDON – The stars will be out tonight for the second day of Homecoming 2018 at Brandon University.
As part of its BU50 community celebration, marking 50 years as a university, BU will welcome Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield to the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium to speak to a pair of full houses.

BRANDON, MB – A unique community astronomy program at Brandon University (BU) is giving the public a rare, free opportunity to view amazing objects in the night sky through the largest telescope between Kenora and Calgary.
In the past three years, more than 4000 people have visited the BU Observatory, not only during warm July nights but also February chills, to peer through the eyepiece of the 16-inch reflecting telescope which can bring the rings of Saturn into clear view.
