The Indigenous Peoples’ Centre (IPC) team at Brandon University(BU) is planning an event to raise awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 Spirit people (MMIWG2S). In recognition of the National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S, the IPC team will host a fire at and guest speakers at the Ceremonial Fire Pit in the Kanvanagh Courtyard, beginning at 11 a.m.
Julia Greer has all kinds of new ideas to spark her teaching career after capping her Brandon University (BU) education with a memorable experience. Greer, who will graduate with a Bachelor of Education (After Degree) this month, had the opportunity to exchange ideas with other pre-service educators at the Western Canadian Student Teacher Conference (WestCAST) in April at the University of Calgary.
Generations of deserving young Manitoba students, who have enrolled at Brandon University, have benefitted from major scholarships thanks to ongoing donations from Brian and Esther Pallister.
This year marks the 25th year that the couple has given to scholarships at the university, beginning with their gift in 1999 to BU’s Success in Mind Campaign, although Brian’s charitable giving to the BU Foundation actually began even earlier, in 1990.

With spring’s arrival, Brandon University is seeing more interest for use of the secure bicycle compound on campus. The bike compound is located at the southeast corner of Parking Lot 1, where McMaster Hall meets the Knowles Douglas Centre (just behind the white Geology building).
Following on a partnership with the Gender and Women’s Studies’ fall speaker series, the Brandon University Library continues to celebrate gender diversity in the Westman community, and is proudly presenting artist Wendy Friesen’s exhibit, Guitars, in the Tommy McLeod Curve Gallery. The Curve Gallery is located on the second floor of the John E. Robbins Library at BU and is free to view during library opening hours.
Brandon University recognized several long-time employees last week at a reception and dinner in honour of faculty and staff who retired between January 2023 and April 2024.
Nine retirees, with cumulative service of 284 years, were honoured at the event. Five of the retirees were able to attend.

“Defining Sexual Misconduct: Power, Media, and #MeToo” has been named the winner of the 2024 MSS Distinguished Book Award, presented by the Midwest Sociological Society, an international professional association of around 1,300 sociologists.
Dr. Austin Gulliver and Dr. Tyler Foster of BU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy will host a viewing of Monday’s solar eclipse.
They will set up two solar-filtered telescopes, from about 12:50 p.m., to about 3 p.m., outside the south entrance of the John R. Brodie Science Centre, along Louise Ave. They will also have welder’s glasses and eclipse viewing shades available for $1 each on a first-come, first-served basis. They also donated 40 glasses to Riverheights School in Brandon.
