Section: Awards and Recognition

Three exceptional Brandon University alumni will be celebrated at this year’s Homecoming Dinner and Awards Evening on Saturday, Sept. 13, as part of BU’s annual Homecoming weekend.

Brandon University is celebrating Dr. Aloysius C. Anyichie, who has been named one of this year’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award recipients. This prestigious national honour celebrates immigrants making remarkable contributions to Canada and winners are selected through an extensive nomination, judging, shortlisting, and public online voting process.

Dr. Rhonda Hinther, a professor in the Department of History at Brandon University, has been awarded a prestigious teaching award from the Canadian Historical Association (CHA). The national honour recognizes her innovative and impactful approach to engaging students with primary sources in historical studies.

Candice Waddell-Henowitch was in Quebec City for meetings when she was shocked to hear her name being called to the stage.

An associate professor in BU’s Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Dr. Waddell-Henowitch was in Quebec to attend the national members meeting of the YWCA; she’s outgoing president of YWCA Westman, a role she held for three years, and is now a member of the YWCA Canada board.

Some of Brandon University’s most committed supporters were recognized with heartfelt praises at the annual BU Foundation luncheon last week.

Donors to the BU Foundation heard directly from students who had felt the impact of their support, as well as from BU breast cancer researcher Dr. Mousumi Majumder.

Family gift earmarked to replace protective dome

Brandon University’s observatory has a new name.

The rooftop facility, long a beacon for stargazers in western Manitoba, will now be known as the Gulliver Astronomical Observatory, following a generous $50,000 donation from the family of BU astronomy professor Dr. Austin Gulliver.
