Brandon University is saddened to learn of the passing of William “Bill” Potter, a dedicated educator, librarian, and former Chair of BU’s Board of Governors. Bill passed away on February 15, 2025, at the age of 84.
A proud BU alumnus, Bill earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees here before going on to a distinguished career in school libraries.
The Government of Canada today recognized Chanie Wenjack as a person of national historic significance, sparked by a student’s public history project at Brandon University.
Wenjack was an Anishinaabe boy from Marten Falls First Nation in northern Ontario who lived for three years at the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora.

Brandon University is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Damir Mirkovic, Professor Emeritus of Sociology, who passed away on February 17, 2025, at the age of 91.

Dr. Mirkovic served as a professor of sociology for 31 years until his retirement in 2000, when he was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus. His scholarly focus on the sociology of genocide, particularly in the Balkans during WWII, contributed to global academic discourse and inspired generations of students.
