The highly anticipated second edition of Brandon University (BU) sociology professor Dr. Christopher J. Schneider’s seminal book, Policing and Social Media: Social Control in an Era of Digital Media, has been published by Lexington Books. The book examines digital media platforms and their transformative impact on modern policing.
The first edition, published in 2016, was critically acclaimed for its groundbreaking analysis of policing in the digital age. Hailed by leading scholars, the book earned widespread praise for its timely and innovative exploration of how social media reshaped police communication and public perception. This critical reception positioned the book as an essential resource in both academic and professional circles.
“This book is the culmination of over a decade of research about social media and policing and this second edition underscores the transformative role social media continues to play in policing,” says Dr. Schneider. “Revisions have been made to every chapter, with new examples and case studies including an investigation of police use of Tik Tok, which surprisingly little scholarship has investigated.”
Dr. Bernadette Ardelli, Vice-President (Research & Graduate Studies) at BU praised Dr. Schneider’s work, saying, “Dr. Schneider’s scholarship exemplifies the cutting-edge research being conducted at Brandon University. His examination of social media’s influence on policing is timely, impactful, and speaks to the interdisciplinary excellence of our faculty. A second edition of an academic monograph signals not only the importance of the subject matter, in this instance policing and social media, but also illustrates the significance of Dr. Schneider’s scholarly contributions to the field.”
Policing and Social Media explores the influence of platforms like TikTok and YouTube on public-facing policing practices, offering foundational insights into the institutional police adaptation of social media platforms into police practices and the broader implications of digital media.
Policing and Social Media is Dr. Schneider’s second monograph this year, having also published Doing Public Scholarship: A Practical Guide to Media Engagement (Routledge, 2024). Policing and Social Media is available for pre-orders through amazon.ca or rowman.com/LexingtonBooks.
