NEAR RIVERS – A Brandon couple is embarking on a project of a lifetime — building their very own self-sustaining home, only the second of its kind in Manitoba.
Their earth-sheltered home’s design will be similar to an “Earthship,” an idea coined by American architect Michael Reynolds, who built and designed the first Earthship in the early 1970s.

BRANDON, MB – In a demonstration of commitment to students, faculty, staff and the community, the Brandon University Faculty Association (BUFA) and Brandon University (BU) have reached a four-year Agreement for the period of April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2019. The Agreement will take effect immediately, having been ratified by both the BUFA membership and the University’s Board of Governors.

On April 15, 2015 the Southwest Regional Development Corp hosted their AGM. They are making progress on business succession and rural innovation. RDI helps to bring focus to these two strategic directions.

Brandon, MB – Seven Brandon University (BU) students have received federal funding for spring/summer research under the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Award (NSERC USRA) program for 2015 totaling $31,500. NSERC USRAs are meant to stimulate students’ research interests in natural sciences and engineering to encourage graduate-level study and the pursuit of a research career in these fields.
“The research work I’m doing this summer will help expand my mathematical knowledge and make me more versatile as a mathematician,” said Ryan Bergen, Mathematics and Computer Science and NSERC USRA recipient.

The first annual Rural Youth Tourism Symposium was held on April 8, 2015 at the Culinary Arts Institute in Brandon, by Westman Tourism. The symposium brought together rural youth from around Manitoba and showcased tourism opportunities in rural areas.

BRANDON, MB – Outstanding student leaders were recognized recently in celebration of their completion of the Student Leadership Certificate program newly offered this year at Brandon University (BU). Student participants received their certificates at a reception honouring their achievements on April 1st.
The Student Leadership Certificate Program is a new, non-credit, co-circular program that was developed through the Student Services office at Brandon University.

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University (BU) Geology students, faculty members and industry representatives celebrated the official opening of the University’s first Geology Core Lab yesterday afternoon on the BU campus. The Lab houses various examples of mining and petroleum drill cores, and provides students with the opportunity to practice their knowledge and prepare for their chosen geology profession by working on real drill cores from mines, exploration projects and petroleum deposits.
