Brandon, MB — With the crisp air and coloured leaves of fall comes the annual celebration of Homecoming — a time to catch up with school friends.
At Brandon University (BU), this tradition will be reprised the weekend of October 14, 15 and 16, with most of the planned activities on campus.
“During your time at Brandon University you make many wonderful friendships, but as time progresses, and life takes you in different directions, you begin to lose some of these connections,” said Derrick Stewart (B.Sc. ‘06.) “Homecoming offers a great opportunity to catch up and re-connect with those people, and to show your support for your alma matter at the same time.”
Though there is a specific focus on reconnecting with classes from the 1960s this year, all BU alumni are invited to take in the reunions, the parties, the entertainment and much more.
“Last year I was very impressed with the attendance of the classes from the ‘50s. I was envious of the great time they had but I was also aware of the disappointments on learning of their classmates who were unable to attend due to illness and death,” said Gerald Butler (B.Sc.‘63.) “I decided that I was never going to wait for another fifth or tenth year anniversary to come back home to a Homecoming weekend at my alma mater.”
The weekend kicks off on the Friday afternoon with a meet-and-greet at the Victoria Inn, followed by a pre-game tailgate party in the main dining hall on campus, then basketball games featuring the BU Bobcats as they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
On Saturday, class reunions will take place in the morning, after which there will be a barbecue lunch, a car show, campus tours, with a Homecoming dinner and dance held in the Victoria Inn Ballroom to cap off the day.
“There is no question in my mind about the importance in my life of the relationships that were formed at Brandon College/Brandon University,” said Butler. “I will do what I can to encourage as many of my colleagues from the ‘60s (and every other decade) to return to Homecoming 2011. The more the merrier!”
Following an award ceremony, the evening entertainment will include comedian Scott Burton and music by The Beetles.
The weekend will close with a brunch on Sunday morning, during which there will be an open mic.
“Brandon University prepared me for my future endeavours, and provided me with many great opportunities,” said Steward, who plans to attend the weekend. “I owe a lot of my success to the institution and want to maintain a connection, and attempt to give back to Brandon University.”
