Brandon, MB — During the 100th Convocation at Brandon University, four outstanding Canadians will be acknowledged for their efforts and accomplishments, each receiving an honorary doctorate.
Brandon University is pleased to announce the conferral of a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) upon musician, singer/songwriter, social activist, keynote speaker, visual artist, author, and tradeswoman, Heather Bishop.
Best known around the world as a talented and respected musician, Heather Bishop has released 14 acclaimed folk and children’s albums, garnering JUNO nominations, Parents’ Choice Gold Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, and National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Awards. She has been awarded both the Order of Canada (2005) and the Order of Manitoba (2001). Her latest CD, released in the spring of 2009, is entitled my face is a map of my time here. In the spring of 2010, Heather released a hardcover coffee table book of her artwork by the same name.
Highly admired for her social activism, Heather Bishop has championed feminism and the environment, speaking out against racism, homophobia and discrimination of any kind. She piloted and taught the first pre-trades training for women course in Canada and is currently doing it again, teaching the Canadian pilot of The Art of Managing Your Career.
Heather Bishop has always lived her belief that when she gives voice to the truth in her own life, it strikes a chord in other people’s lives as well. She is dedicated to an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just world.
“Heather Bishop brings her energy, passion, talent and commitment to her music and to her multifaceted public life. Brandon University is proud to welcome this distinguished Manitoban as a new member of our graduating class,” said Deborah Poff, Brandon University’s President and Vice-Chancellor.
There will be four convocation ceremonies at Brandon University this spring. These will take place June 3 and 4 at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.
