BRANDON, MB – The young pianist who won the 2010 Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition (a.k.a. the E-Gré), Claudia Chan will give a recital in Brandon on November 16. The 20 year old musician is currently on a 14-city, cross-Canada tour — one of the prizes she garnered following her winning semi-finals and finals performances in May.
Hailing from Ottawa, Chan has been deemed an “ambassador for new music” and a “powerful, expressive, and energetic pianist” by Megumi Masaki, the Artistic Director of the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition. A humanitarian at heart who raises money for various charities through her music-making, this young performer has played as a soloist, a collaborative artist and a chamber musician in Canada and the United States. Currently, Chan is completing a Bachelor of Music at the Glenn Gould School, as a Dean’s scholarship student studying with David Louie and John Perry.
Among the works she will perform is the commissioned work entitled Curlicue, written especially for this year’s competition by Manitoba composer Karen Sunabacka. This piece was compulsory at both the semi-finalist and the finalist levels of the E-Gré. This competition not only strives to encourage aspiring musicians to explore contemporary music, but it also gives Canadian composers an opportunity to write a new work, hear it performed during the competition weekend and know it will be introduced to other audiences during the winner’s tour.
The pro series concert featuring pianist Claudia Chan will take place at 8 p.m., on Tuesday, November 16, in the Lorne Watson Recital, located in the Queen Elizabeth II Music Building, on the Brandon University campus. Her programme will also include pieces by Sofia Gubaidulina, Chan Ka Nin and Patrick Cardy.
The next pro series performance will feature the talented faculty members of the School of Music, on January 11, 2011. Prior to that, the pro series plus will present the Ehnes Trio, with violinist James Ehnes, ‘cellist Robert deMaine and pianist Andrew Armstrong, at 8 p.m. on December 20, in the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.
Tickets to all pro series concerts are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, alumni and students, and $8 for Conservatory students. Tickets for the Ehnes Trio performance are $25 each for adults, $20 for seniors and $10 for students. Tickets can be bought at the door or in advance at the School of Music. Seating is limited and programmes are subject to change.
