BRANDON, MB – Brandon University is proud to announce that James Ehnes has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.
For his accomplishments as a concert violinist, who began violin studies at the age of four and who has received acclaim both in Canada and abroad.
“The School of Music salutes and congratulates Jimmy on this magnificent honor and accomplishment,” says Dr. Michael Kim, Dean of the School of Music. “We are very proud of him, and look forward to our continued association and collaboration with this very prominent ambassador for the community of Brandon, and our university.”
He is currently the Francis Chaplin Guest Professor of Violin at Brandon University and has given master classes to the School’s students in previous years. In October 2005, James was honoured by Brandon University with a Doctor of Music degree (honoris causa) – the youngest to receive such an award.
At the age of 13, James made his orchestral solo debut with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, two years after winning the Grand Prize in Strings at the Canadian Music Competition. In 2007, he was elected as a Fellow to the Royal Society of Canada, again the youngest individual to receive such an honour. James has forged an international career in classical music. With more than 20 recordings to his credit, he has performed extensively in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America.
James is the son of Alan Ehnes, associate professor of trumpet in the BU School of Music, and of Barbara Ehnes, former director of the Brandon School of Dance. He currently lives in Bradenton, Florida with his wife Kate.
