BU prof named to Winnipeg mayor’s advisory group

Brandon University religion professor Dr. Alison Marshall will be a member of the Winnipeg mayor’s newly-announced Multi Faith and Culture Liaison Circle.

Dr. Marshall teaches and researches Asian religion, migration and history at BU, helped create a Labyrinth of Peace at the Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre to celebrate the varied cultures and religions in Brandon, and received the provincial William Norrie Arts and Culture Award in 2021 in recognition of her longstanding volunteer & academic work with the Chinese, Muslim, Filipino and Jewish communities.

Brandon University Professor Wins Literary Prize

BRANDON, MB – A Brandon University professor of religion has won the 2015 Canadian Society for the Study of Religion First Book Prize, an annual award recognizing an outstanding monograph in Religious Studies.
Dr. Alison Marshall won the national prize for her book The Way of the Bachelor: Early Chinese Settlement in Western Manitoba.

Moving Portrayal of Chinese Canadians in New Book

BRANDON, MB – A Brandon University professor, internationally acclaimed for research into racism and immigration, has published a new book about the Chinese families who settled the Canadian Prairies in the late 1800s, and their stories of resilience and resourcefulness.
Cultivating Connections: The Making of Chinese Prairie Canada, is the result of nearly a decade of research and more than three hundred interviews by Dr. Alison Marshall, Department of Religion at Brandon University (BU).

Professor Studies Racism on the Prairies

BRANDON, MB – A Brandon University (BU) professor is co-hosting an international symposium to examine Chinese experiences of racism in Northern Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta villages, towns and small cities from the 1880s until 1960.
Dr. Alison Marshall, BU Department of Religion, and Pauline Greenhill at the University of Winnipeg are presenting “Masquerade, Masking and Multiculturalism in Canada: An International Symposium” as part of their five-year, $287,000 Insight Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
