Art meets philosophy in an event coming to Brandon on Friday, March 7.
The Right to be Known is a paint night and more, as participants will visually explore philosophical and personal perspectives with Winnipeg-based artist Bruno de Oliveira Jayme. Hosted by the Brandon University (BU) Department of Philosophy at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (AGSM), starting at 7 p.m., the free event will include snacks, refreshments, and live music by TAJ.
The Right to be Known will continue the creation of a mosaic that began at an event with 250 participants this past September at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. The project was developed by the Northwestern Epistemic Reparations Working Group to fill a gap in current reparation processes for human rights violations, which often fail to bring to light the stories of survivors and victims.
“More than 40 countries have created truth commissions in response to tragedies that include political conflicts and institutionalized injustice,” said Dr. Cameron Boult, Associate Professor of Philosophy at BU. “In the past many of those efforts have been focused on punishment and compensation, but there are other ways to find justice that start with telling and hearing the truth, so we can gain a greater understanding of one another.”
“Epistemic reparations” focus on the right to be known of those who have been rendered invisible, vilified, or who have had their identities systematically distorted by others. They focus on centring, restorying, delabeling, and amplifying voices as a road to healing.
The Right to be Known is a free event, and all are welcome, but pre-registration is required. Participants may register at AGSM.ca/event/the-right-to-be-known.
