Brandon University Co-op Program Hits New Record for Student Participation

The BU Co-op program held a Kick-off Celebration as it celebrated a new high in the number of students.

Brandon University has hit another significant milestone for this year’s BU Co-op program, with 56 students participating—the largest cohort in the program’s seven-year history. This achievement highlights BU’s commitment to providing students with industry experience and professional development. Through strong partnerships with local and national employers, the BU Co-op program ensures students graduate future ready.

“We are incredibly proud of the growth of our BU Co-op program and its positive impact on our students’ academic and professional journeys,” said David Docherty, University President. “Every year, more students see the value of applying their education in industry settings. Co-op experiences enhance resumes, build confidence, expand professional networks, and make students more competitive in today’s job market.”

Cora Dupuis, who leads the BU Co-op program, added that hosting a BU Co-op placement also gives employers a leg up.

“The job market is competitive for workers as well as for employers, and the BU Co-op program is a valuable resource for BU students and for employers — as well as the broader community,” she said. “By connecting academic learning with applied experience, BU Co-op provides students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in their careers. For employers, it offers the opportunity to shape the next generation of talent, while fostering long-term relationships and contributing to a skilled local workforce. This collaboration between students, employers, and the community strengthens our region’s economy and ensures a future-ready workforce.”

In a province grappling with one of the highest rates of out-migration in Canada, work-integrated learning programs like co-operative education play a crucial role in retaining talented young professionals.

Ayushi Patel, an international student from Kenya in BU’s Bachelor of Business Administration (Accounting) program, sought practical experience to complement her studies and pursue a career with one of Canada’s top accounting firms. Through the BU Co-op program, she received invaluable support in refining her resume and interview skills, securing a summer position with MNP —an opportunity she returned to for a second summer.

“Joining the BU Co-op program was one of the best decisions I made during my degree,” said Patel, who now has a full-time job offer awaiting her upon graduation and a promising future in Manitoba. “The support I received helped me secure a position, and Co-op gave me the confidence and experience to take the next step in my career.”

Dupuis who is a co-op researcher as well as the leader of BU’s Co-op program, will discuss youth retention and the role of work-integrated learning programs like co-op at the upcoming Brandon Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Thursday, February 20, 2025. Her keynote talk will emphasize the importance of these programs in retaining young talent and fostering community growth. In light of this, Brandon University is actively seeking employers interested in engaging with the next generation of professionals through co-op placements. Employers partnering with BU can shape the future workforce while benefiting from fresh perspectives and emerging talent.
