On Wednesday, Feb. 6, the Arizona State University Wind Ensemble will present the world premiere of the band version of Arcadia Trombonica, an innovative composition by acclaimed composer and Brandon University (BU) alumnus Kenley Kristofferson that was commissioned by BU School of Music professor Dr. Nora Wilson.
Originally composed as a duet for trombone and 8-bit music, Arcadia Trombonica has been reimagined as a full-band arrangement, expanding its dynamic range and sonic palette. The piece seamlessly merges the traditional sounds of wind ensemble instrumentation with the nostalgic tones of retro gaming, creating a vibrant celebration of contemporary music and gaming culture.
The project also underscores the research-driven approach fostered at Brandon University. Dr. Bernadette Ardelli, Vice-President of Research and Graduate Studies, highlighted this aspect: “The development of Arcadia Trombonica demonstrates the intersection of artistic creativity and rigorous research. This composition is not only a musical achievement but also a deep exploration of the relationship between acoustic and digital soundscapes. It reflects Brandon University’s commitment to innovative, research-informed artistry.”
Dean of Music Greg Gatien added, “Arcadia Trombonica highlights Kenley’s incredible skill as a composer and underscores the strong culture of collaboration and creativity that has long been a hallmark of our wonderful School of Music. Nora Wilson’s contribution as a trombonist and pedagogue was pivotal to Kenley’s conception of this work. Her deep understanding of the instrument, combined with a sophisticated and inclusive sense of artistry certainly played into making this a truly special piece of music.”
Kristofferson has been recognized for his unique ability to blend traditional and contemporary elements in his compositions. Drawing inspiration from the storytelling and soundscapes of 2D side-scroller video games, Arcadia Trombonica brings an imaginative narrative to life through music. Extensive research informed the composition process, from studying the history and technical intricacies of 8-bit music to experimenting with ways to integrate trombone and ensemble soundscapes effectively.
“The development of Arcadia Trombonica demonstrates the intersection of artistic creativity and rigorous research.”
Dr. Bernadette Ardelli, Vice-President (Research & Graduate Studies)
Dr. Wilson, Associate Professor of Low Brass at Brandon University, was a key collaborator on the original duet version and played an essential role in shaping the trombone’s voice within this innovative composition. Her expertise and passion for pushing the boundaries of performance practice have been instrumental in the success of this project.
“Nora’s insights into the trombone’s capabilities and her enthusiasm for exploring new artistic directions have had a profound impact on the evolution of this piece,” said Gatien.
This project would not have been possible without the generous support of the Brandon University Research Committee, the Manitoba Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts.
Dr. Wilson expressed her gratitude, stating, “These organizations provide vital resources that empower artists and researchers to innovate and create meaningful work. Their support allows projects like Arcadia Trombonica to flourish and reach new audiences.”
