The fascinating stories of Brandon University (BU) international students were in the spotlight again this fall with another successful staging of the Destination: BU Video Challenge.

This was the fourth year of Destination: BU, which documents the students’ journeys to Canada through social media videos, sharing glimpses of their lives at home and their travel experience with a worldwide audience. Two students were chosen to receive $500 prizes to contribute to their education: Khairat Shittu for receiving the most votes in an online poll, and Melody Fagelogo for best video as selected by the Destination: BU committee.

“Brandon University has a great deal to offer international students. We provide them with an excellent education and experience, a welcoming community, and value that is second to none,” said David Rowland, Director of International Activities at BU. “At the same time, we’re grateful that they’ve chosen us from their many options, and it’s very rewarding to learn more about our students and their journeys through the videos they share with us.”

International students are important members of the Brandon University community. Nearly 450 international students are currently enrolled at BU, making up almost 15 per cent of the student population.

“It’s very rewarding to learn more about our students and their journeys.”

Fagelogo came to BU from Ghana this fall to begin the Master of Arts (Rural Development) program. She said receiving the good new about her Destination: BU video was a pleasant surprise.

“I was super excited. I didn’t see it coming at all,” Fagelogo said. “I loved being able to share through pictures and videos.”

Shittu is also in her first year at BU, studying Pre-Nursing. Although she is originally from Nigeria, her journey was a little shorter this time as she came to Brandon from the United States, where she has lived for several years.

“I had been waiting to hear the results, and I was excited to get the news,” Shittu said of the competition.
