Brandon University (BU) is proud to announce the publication of Uncut: A Cultural Analysis of the Foreskin, the latest scholarly work by Dr. Jonathan A. Allan, a leading figure in the study of men and masculinities and a Canada Research Chair in this field.
Published by the University of Regina Press in November 2024, Uncut explores the foreskin’s cultural, medical, and social representations, offering fresh insights into topics often overlooked in academic and public discourse. Dr. Allan’s research situates the foreskin within larger discussions of body politics, identity, and masculinity. Drawing on his expertise in cultural studies and comparative literature, he combines literary analysis, personal narratives, and historical perspectives to examine how cultural practices and debates shape our understanding of anatomy and ethics.
A prolific scholar, Dr. Allan’s previous works include Men, Masculinities, and Infertilities and Reading from Behind: A Cultural Analysis of the Anus, both of which have been celebrated for their innovative approaches to critical gender studies. His contributions continue to position Brandon University as a hub for cutting-edge research in the humanities.
“Dr. Allan’s work exemplifies the thoughtful, interdisciplinary scholarship that we value at Brandon University,” said Dr. Bernadette Ardelli, Vice-President Research & Graduate Studies at BU. “His new book challenges societal norms and opens the door to meaningful conversations about identity and the human body.”
A book launch for Uncut: A Cultural Analysis of the Foreskin, will be held on Thursday Nov. 21 at 6 p.m., in the John E. Robbins Library at Brandon University.
