Orientation is an opportunity for students to meet new friends.

A new academic year begins at Brandon University (BU) with Orientation taking place on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

About 650 new students will begin their BU journey on Tuesday by getting acquainted with the campus and their peers, followed by the start of fall-term classes on Wednesday. Orientation is actually the continuation of the welcoming process for students, which included both in-person and online pre-orientation events in August.

Orientation day is packed with activities to help students get to know each other and their new surroundings, including a popular meet-and-greet activity in the Healthy Living Centre, campus tours, faculty welcome sessions, a free lunch and games on the front lawn. Various other welcome activities take place over the next two weeks.

“There’s a lot going on during Orientation day, but we structure it in a way that allows students to take it all in without being overwhelmed, including drop-in sessions where they can see the resources that are available on a schedule that works for them,” said Leanne Barcellona, BU’s Director of Recruitment and Retention. “By spreading out our other Welcome Week activities, students have a chance to explore and choose what appeals to them most. It’s a great way to find new interests and meet new friends, as well as to learn about all that BU has to offer them.”

The Orientation and Welcome Week activities will blend into the BU 125 Homecoming, scheduled for September 12 to 15. This community celebration is open to all, marking 125 years since the founding of Brandon College in 1899 and is a great opportunity to bring together current BU students and alumni.

“This is an incredibly exciting time of year for me,” said Dr. David Docherty, BU’s President and Vice-Chancellor. “The return of our students, faculty and staff brings tremendous energy to our campus and to our city. I really enjoy the opportunity to meet and learn about our new students in these first few weeks, and to top it off by welcoming back to so many old friends for this milestone Homecoming this will be a true celebration of our history and our future as a leader in post-secondary education.”
