Brandon University (BU) is honouring some of its outstanding female students in celebration of International Women’s Day on Tuesday.
The Status of Women’s Review Committee (SWRC) at BU will hold a virtual awards ceremony to recognize 14 students on Tuesday. Additionally, the Office of International Activities will hold a drop-in meet-and-greet for students in its English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. This year women comprise the entire cohort of EAP students.
Later in Women’s Week, on Thursday, the Alumni Office at BU will hold an International Women’s Day themed mentoring and networking event as part of its BU Café series.
The SWRC honourees were nominated by BU faculty and staff for their contributions as student leaders and to the wider community. The online awards ceremony will take place from noon to 1 p.m, and student profiles can be found at BrandonU.ca/Womens-Week.
“It is incredible to read the comments from the nominators,” said SWRC chair Candice Waddell-Henowitch. “These students have managed to create an impact despite the pandemic and forge powerful connections and relationships across campus and with their faculty. I encourage everyone to visit the website to read more about these inspiring women and to take part in our virtual celebration.”

The English for Academic Purposes reception will take place from 10:30 to 11 a.m., in the EAP Classroom on the main floor of McMaster Hall. The EAP program helps students who speak English as an additional language prepare to study in a university environment, or for their own professional or personal goals. This year’s cohort includes students from China, Syria, Colombia, Chile and Pakistan.
Thursday’s online BU Café event will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. Speakers will include Christine Silva of Shopify, Emma Mohns of Kinaxis and Dave Wilkin of Ten Thousand Coffees as they discuss the tactics women use to navigate successful careers.
The theme for International Women’s Day this year is #BreakTheBias, challenging us to strive for a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.
“The amazing diversity that we have represented at BU shows us that the biases we hold are imaginary,” said SWRC member Morganna Malyon, who is one of the organizers of Tuesday’s awards ceremony. “We have students who are constantly pushing the boundaries and proving that their futures are not defined by their gender or where they come from. I’m always excited by the opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of those incredible students.”
