Brandon University is signing the Scarborough Charter, a national post-secondary initiative to support Black inclusion and to redress anti-Black racism.

The virtual signing of the Scarborough Charter is being held at 2 p.m. Central Time tomorrow, via Zoom. Please register online to obtain a link.

“Brandon University is proud to sign the Scarborough Charter,” said BU President David Docherty. “We are committed to its principles, and we are determined to be leaders in turning back anti-Black racism and promoting Black inclusion.”

More than 40 universities and colleges across the country join BU in signing the Charter, which is the result of an inclusive dialogue and co-creation process.

“Dismantling systemic forms of injustice to build a truly fair and equitable world, where everyone is free to achieve their potential, is one of the great moral imperatives of our time,” Docherty said.

The Scarborough Charter features four overarching principles: Black Flourishing, Inclusive Excellence, Mutuality, and Accountability, to guide policy, decision-making, and concrete action.

The Charter outlines a number of institutional actions for consideration and action, in the broad areas of governance, research, teaching and learning, and community engagement. These will help guide the development of BU’s own commitments.

Docherty noted that actions under the Scarborough Charter will complement and enhance other anti-racist initiatives at Brandon University and across the country, including Indigenous inclusion, and BU’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

Brandon University has already proposed the creation of a subcommittee of smaller institutions that are Charter signatories, to best focus on the most achievable actions.

“Brandon University will be the model for smaller, community-focused institutions like ours to create real and lasting change,” Docherty said. “I am filled with optimism and resolve.”
