Brandon University appoints Acting Indigenous Advisor to the President

A new position at Brandon University will provide guidance at the very top administrative levels as the institution works towards Indigenization, de-Colonization and Reconciliation.

Chris Lagimodiere has been named the Acting Indigenous Advisor to the President and will assume the role as soon as possible. Among Lagimodiere’s responsibilities will be assessing, prioritizing, and implementing the many recommendations that are coming from the BU Senate’s Indigenous Education sub-committee, which he chairs.

The position is anticipated to be a transitional measure, until the hiring of a new full-time permanent Indigenous Senior Lead, a position that was approved in the 2021–22 BU Budget, but a position that will take time to create and recruit for.

“We know it is essential to include Indigenous perspectives in all of our decision-making, and this is something we cannot wait on,” said BU President David Docherty. “In the future, the Indigenous Senior Lead will be a critical member of our administrative team, but we need those perspectives now, and I am thankful to Chris for agreeing to take on this new responsibility.”

Lagimodiere has until now served as Director of the Indigenous Peoples Centre at BU, and BU will immediately be seeking an Acting Director for the IPC.

“Brandon University’s commitment to Reconciliation is genuine, and it is a privilege to be given such responsibility to help implement it,” said Lagimodiere. “I am grateful to the support of all the elders and knowledge-keepers who have guided me in the past, and I know I will be seeking their wisdom and insight even more in this new role.”
