BRANDON – To mark this month’s additional day and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Brandon University (BU) Clarinet Festival, the pro series will present a recital featuring famed clarinetist Franklin Cohen on Saturday, Feb. 29.
This concert will be Cohen’s premiere performance in the BU School of Music’s pro series.
“We are very fortunate to have a world-renowned artist like Franklin Cohen come to Brandon to perform as a part of the BU Clarinet Festival and the pro series,” said Catherine Wood, a School of Music Professor and the Director of the BU Clarinet Festival, which begins on February 29 and concludes the following day.
“Mr. Cohen performed with the top orchestra in the United States — Cleveland — for more than 40 years, and he is one of the most well-known and respected clarinetists in the world. For this performance, he will be joined by his daughter, violinist Diana Cohen, who is concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic, and her husband, pianist Roman Rabinovich. Diana, Roman, and Franklin are in demand around the globe as soloists. To hear them perform together in Brandon will be the concert of a lifetime.”
Few of the pieces in the trio’s program have been previously presented during the 21 seasons of the pro series, underscoring the uniqueness of this evening. Prior to the intermission, the musicians will interpret Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio K. 498, and Mendelssohn’s Sonata in F Major for Violin and Piano. The final two works of the evening will be Brahms’ Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in F minor, Op. 120 no. 1, and Bartok’s Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet and Piano, Sz 111.
“This performance promises to be memorable, and it is a phenomenal highlight to an already exceptional lineup for the 2020 edition of the BU Clarinet Festival,” said Greg Gatien, Dean of Music at BU and Artistic Director of the pro series.
“Along with this recital, the Festival will present other concerts throughout the two-day event, and we invite everyone to these performances.”
The pro series performance featuring Franklin Cohen, Diana Cohen, and Rabinovich will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 29, in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, in the Queen Elizabeth II Music Building, at BU. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students, seniors and alumni, and are available at the door or in advance in the Main Office in the School of Music.
As part of the BU Clarinet Festival, audiences can also hear André Moisan, a clarinetist with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, on Sunday, March 1, at 1:30 p.m., at the School of Music. In addition to Moisan, this free concert will feature guest artists from the Clarinet Festival including Jenny Maclay and Lisa Canning, along with Catherine Wood and other BU faculty members.
Cohen’s performance will be the second pro series concert of the week. On Tuesday, Feb. 25, the Lorne Watson Recital Hall will be filled with the music of Les Voix humaines, as their Consort of Viols brings a fresh take on Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Tuesday’s performance will begin at 7:30 p.m., with tickets costing $20 for adults and $15 for students, seniors and alumni.
The final offering of the pro series’ 2019-20 season will feature pianist Corey Hamm, who will interpret Frederic Rzewski’s theme and 36 variations entitled The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. The following evening, he will give a second recital that will include Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 84, Dutilleux’s Piano Sonata, and Kapustin’s Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 54.
