Popular Faculty Concert marks return of Pro Series

Talented professional musicians from the Brandon University (BU) School of Music will perform the first pro series concert of 2020 on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall.

The annual Faculty Concert will feature inspired interpretations that survey both musical periods and styles.

“For more than two decades, the Faculty Concert has been a favourite among the pro series offerings,” said Greg Gatien, Dean of Music at BU. “It is a great pleasure to present the exceptional musicians who make up our outstanding team of educators in the School of Music. This evening showcases their talents and their dedication to making music and to sharing it with the pro series audience.”

Among the performers and works in the Faculty Concert lineup are:

• Drummer Eric Platz, pianist Jeff Presslaff and clarinetist Cathy Wood in “Chorinho,” from Tre Danze Latine by Michelle Mangani;
• Soprano Sarah Hall and flutist Nancy Hennen in Dos Poemas de Juan Ramon Jimenez by Joaquin Rodrigo;
• Trombonist Aaron Wilson and pianist Andrea Pedro in The Devil’s Dermish by Lauren Bernofsky;
• Cellists Leanne Zacharias and Laura Jacyna in Triumvirate by Raphael Weinroth-Browne;
• Violinist Kerry DuWors, violist Rob Richardson Jr., Hennen and Zacharias in “Allegro” from Flute Quartet No. 1, in D major, K. 285 by W. A. Mozart;
• Violinist Josias Sanchez, Wood, DuWors, Richardson Jr., and Zacharias in “Allegro” from Clarinet Quintet, K. 581 by W. A. Mozart.

Tuesday’s Faculty Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, in the Queen Elizabeth II Music Building. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students, seniors and alumni, and are available at the door or in advance at the Main Office in the School of Music. The following pro series concert will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 25, featuring Les voix humaines, a viola da gamba ensemble from Montreal.

Additionally, on Feb. 1 and 2, the annual Brandon University Indigenous New Music Festival will take place at the School of Music. Performing during the event, under the direction of Megumi Masaki will be the BU New Music Ensemble. Joining them will be two guest artists: cellist and composer Cris Derksen; and Melodie McIver, a musician, media artist, traditional pow wow dancer and arts educator. Both evening concerts will take place in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, and admission is free.
