Brandon University’s (BU’s) successful Co-operative Education Program is getting a new leader.
Cora Dupuis has joined BU as its new Co-operative Program Coordinator. Dupuis replaces Kelley Mitton, who will leave for New Brunswick later this month after spending the past two years at BU, developing the Co-op program and then guiding it through its first year of operation.
Dupuis brings a background in post-secondary education and experiential learning to her new role.
“I am delighted welcome Cora to BU in this very important position,” said Dr. Steve Robinson, BU’s Vice-President (Academic and Provost). “Experiential learning is something students all across Canada are asking for as they seek to leverage the skills and knowledge they gain through their education into successful careers. I am proud of all that Brandon University has accomplished in this area, and I look forward to seeing Co-op continue to grow here.”
Introduced in September 2018, the Co-op program at BU matches students with employers for full-time paid work terms that last between 12 and 16 weeks. The work terms are integrated with students’ academic schedules and allow them to gain valuable job experience and feedback from their employers. During the first year of the program, students worked with employers including the National Research Council, Cando Rail Services and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
Before her upcoming departure from Brandon University, Mitton has been helping Dupuis gain familiarity with the program and introducing her to the employers and industry contacts who have been key to Co-op’s early success at BU.
“Kelley has done a tremendous job launching our Co-op program, and I am pleased that she is able to stay around a bit longer to help us to make a smooth transition,” Robinson said. “I thank Kelley for the hard work she has put into this exciting initiative and wish her well in her future endeavours.”
