A pioneer in the emerging and important field of ribosome assembly, from Yale University’s School of Medicine, will visit Brandon University (BU) to talk about women in science on Wednesday, June 26. The free talk by Dr. Susan J. Baserga, titled “Resilience and Ribosomes: Practising Persistence in Life and the Lab,” will take place in the Louis Riel Room at BU, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Dr. Baserga is a world leader in the study of human genetic disorders that cause ribosome assembly defects. Her talk, which is open to the public, will be aimed at an audience including university and high school students, clinicians in the health industry, university faculty and anyone who is interested in challenging boundaries to pursue their dreams. The talk could be of particular interest to BU students in the areas of Science, Health Studies and the Gender and Women’s Studies program, or to those who would like to study in those fields.
“Dr. Baserga has a long-standing history of supporting the training, development and career advancement of women in science,” said Dr. Bernadette Ardelli, Dean of BU’s Faculty of Science, which is sponsoring the event. “We are fortunate to welcome a scientist and speaker of her calibre to our Brandon campus for what is sure to be an inspiring talk.”
Prior to her Brandon visit, Dr. Baserga will be in Winnipeg as a keynote speaker at RiboWest 2019 at St. John’s College on the University of Manitoba campus. RiboWest is a conference that draws RNA researchers from western and central Canada as well as the United States. It is being held in Manitoba for the first time.
One of the co-organizers of RiboWest 2019 is Dr. Michael Charette, an Assistant Professor in BU’s Department of Chemistry. His post-doctoral work at Yale was supervised by Dr. Baserga.
