BRANDON, Man. — Past and current students of Brandon University’s (BU’s) Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies (ADES) department will gather this weekend to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the department’s creation.

In conjunction with BU’s Homecoming events, the attendees will meet in a series of participant-driven sessions to discuss current issues in emergency management and the connections to higher education. The ADES faculty members are proud of the success the department’s graduates have achieved in their professional careers, and this is an opportunity for the ADES alumni to share their experiences.

“The ADES department was approved in 2001, and the first class was offered that September, just a week before the 9/11 attacks in the United States,” says Jack Lindsay, Associate Professor and Department Chair of ADES.

“As the first university department in Canada to focus solely on disaster studies and emergency management practice, ADES has attracted students from across the country and around the world.”

Graduates of the four-year Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree programs now work coast to coast and overseas in a range of emergency management careers. ADES graduates have found employment in all levels of government, non-government organizations and the private sector.

“The demand for emergency managers is growing, and the ADES department is actively shaping the profession’s future,” says Lindsay. “The overall goal of the department’s teaching and research is to make our communities safer. This weekend’s gathering is a chance to acknowledge the contribution ADES graduates are making to their communities.”
