BRANDON, Man. – The Brandon University (BU) Department of Chemistry is forming bonds with area students this week.
Students representing 15 schools from Brandon and rural communities as far away as Grandview are visiting BU for Chemistry Week. Each day of the week students are taking part in fun demonstrations and experiments designed to pique their interest in chemistry.
“I believe this is one of the larger annual outreach programs for elementary and high school students on campus,” said Michael Charette, Chair of the Department of Chemistry.
“It’s wonderful to get students to BU to see our facilities and learn about chemistry. Ideally we will see some of these students in our program in the future, but it is also very valuable just to generate interest for chemistry and science in general.”
High school students from Major Pratt (Russell), Hamiota, Erickson, Rivers, Deloraine, Souris, Elkhorn and Grandview are participating this year along with Brandon elementary school students from Waverly Park, St. Augustine, Christian Heritage, Earl Oxford, Linden Lanes, Meadows and École Harrison.
The high school students take part in one full-day session, while the elementary students visit for either a morning or an afternoon.
