DAUPHIN, MB. — Residents of the Parkland region now have the opportunity to take first-year Brandon University (BU) courses through classes delivered in Dauphin this fall.

Recognizing that education is central and crucial to the region’s continued growth and social well-being, over the past six months, BU has been working with the City of Dauphin on a one-year pilot project to bring first-year university courses to the Parkland region. Both organizations believe that there is an opportunity for expanded post-secondary programming in Dauphin and are pleased to partner to implement this new suite of courses in 2016.

“We very much appreciate Brandon University’s partnership in providing more opportunities for students and professors in Dauphin and in saving families thousands of dollars for accommodations for first-year students who would otherwise have to move to Brandon or Winnipeg,” said Dauphin Mayor Eric Irwin. “We’ve been working on this for four years and we’re very happy it has finally come to pass.”

“Brandon University has had a longstanding engagement with Dauphin and through this partnership we are supporting post-secondary education opportunities across the region,” said Brandon University President Dr. Gervan Fearon. “Many of the jobs being created today require university or college education and training. The partnership between the City of Dauphin and Brandon University reflects our shared effort to meet student needs and contribute to community growth and development.”

Starting this September, students will have the opportunity to enroll in a variety of courses that will act as a stepping-stone for pursuing programs within the Faculties of Arts, Science and Education at BU or other Manitoba universities. The courses will be taught by instructors in Dauphin, and delivered to students face-to-face. A local coordinator will also be hired to help students with the registration process and throughout the academic year.

“We are very excited about the possibility of reaching out to the Parkland region to offer students there an opportunity to start their university studies while still living or working close to home,” said Steve Robinson, Acting Vice-President (Academic and Provost) at BU. “If we find that there is sufficient demand, BU may continue this experiment in years to come.”

A public information session will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 100 Main Street South in Dauphin. To receive program updates by email please contact the Economic Development office at the City of Dauphin ced@dauphin.ca or 204-622-3229.
