BRANDON, MB – Students at Brandon University (BU) are making Christmas a special time for classmates unable to return home for the holidays, with the 3rd annual Campus Christmas.
Originally conceived for BU’s growing population of international students, Campus Christmas immediately became a campus-wide gathering with food and events for all students and University staff.
“The holiday season is about sharing and caring,” says Joel Springer, the President of the Brandon University Students’ Union, “and Campus Christmas provides an opportunity for people on campus who might otherwise be alone to get together for some comradery and fun.”
“It’s a real collaboration,” says Paul O’Driscoll, the University’s Director of Residence Hall Programs. “Students offer to bring potluck dishes that are traditional holiday foods in their cultures. At least one senior University administrator is planning to cook a turkey. It’s quite exciting to see both the diversity and the enthusiasm of the people taking part.”
More than 3,000 students enroll at Brandon University each year, from more than 30 different nations including China, Egypt, Finland, Nigeria, Pakistan and Russia. For some, Campus Christmas will be their first experience with a celebration not observed in many parts of the world.
“The educational experience is more than classroom learning,” says BU’s Associate Vice-President (Student Services and Enrolment Management) and University Registrar, Tom Brophy. “Campus Christmas, living in residence, and taking part in student clubs and activities are just a few of the things which add value to a student’s time at Brandon University.”
Campus Christmas will be held the evening of December 22.
