BRANDON, MB – A celebrated music student from Brandon University (BU) has been invited to perform and deliver a lecture at an international piano competition in Serbia later this month.

Luis Ramirez, BU School of Music (web)Luis Ramirez auditioned in April before an international panel of the World Piano Teachers Association (WPTA), and was selected to take part in the International Piano Competition in Novi Sad, Serbia. Ramirez graduated with honours last week from BU’s School of Music, and returns this fall to pursue a Master of Music in Piano Performance.

“This is an incredible honour,” says Ramirez, who came to BU in 2012 from his home in Aguascalientes, Mexico, after winning a full scholarship. “I will have the opportunity to interact with pianists from around the world. My experiences in Mexico, then Canada, and now Europe all help to make me a better artist and musician.”

The mission of the international conference is to provide laureates with high-level performance opportunities before an audience of world-class pianists, professors and critics. Ramirez will present his lecture and recital, The Five Styles of Sergei Prokofiev’s Music.

School of Music Dean, Dr. Michael Kim, says Ramirez has enjoyed two exceptional years at BU, earning numerous prizes and scholarships at the Brandon Arts Festival and the Manitoba Provincial Festival, including the Western Manitoba Tudor Bowl. “This summer,” says Dr. Kim, “Luis is a guest artist at the Centric New Music Festival in Lethbridge, AB, and will be attending the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy – all testaments to his outstanding talent.”

The WPTA International Piano Competition will take place June 27-July 3 in Novi Sad, Serbia.
