BRANDON, MB – Three students from the Brandon University (BU) School of Music selected to represent Manitoba in the 2014 National Youth Choir (NYC) in Halifax are now in the Maritimes, performing in a week-long tour. Aliah Nelson, Emma Lytle and Connor Lavell have joined 37 singers representing the other nine provinces.

Dr. Andree Dagenais, choral studies instructor with the School of Music, says, “This is a unique opportunity to enrich their vocal skills, network with advanced vocalists who will be their colleagues in the professional world, and to meet conductors from across Canada. I am very happy that such opportunities are available for our students. “

The NYC is formed every two years with four singers from each province between the ages of 18 and 25 selected through cross-country auditions. Since its inception in 1984, the choir has won critical acclaim, with some of the finest Canadian choral conductors invited to conduct. NYC concerts have been broadcast nationally on the CBC Stereo Network.

Aliah Nelson is a soprano, 3rd year Voice Performance Major; Emma Lytle, mezzo soprano, 3rd year Voice Performance Major, and Connor Lavell, Baritone, 5th year Voice Performance Major.

Dean for the School of Music, Dr. Michael Kim, says “I am thrilled at the success of our music students being chosen for the National Youth Choir. It is a significant honor, and I am very proud of them.”

The choir rehearsed in Halifax, NS, during the week of May 4th, and has embarked on a week-long tour in the Maritime Provinces culminating with a final gala concert at the National Conference of Canadian Choral Conductors in Halifax.
