BRANDON, MB – A new Master of Science degree will be offered at Brandon University (BU) beginning in 2014, benefitting student success and the economy in southwestern Manitoba. Minister of Education and Advanced Learning, James Allum, made the announcement today in a science lab on the BU campus.
BU President and Vice-Chancellor Deborah Poff asserts, “Students, whether they are local or international, will now have the option of continuing their post-graduate science work in Brandon. In turn, our faculty researchers are able to access more national funding which will be spent locally.”
Beginning in September, students will be welcomed into the Interdisciplinary Master of Science (Environmental and Life Sciences) program. “Graduates with a Master’s degree,” says BU’s Dean of Science, Dr. Andrew Egan, “have more career paths open to them, commence at a higher level and are more readily promoted than employees with less education.”
The Manitoba government has committed $250,000 per year towards new faculty and support staff positions, which is expected to generate significant spin-off.
“Federal government research grants have traditionally gone to institutions where graduate students can work alongside faculty researchers,” says Dr. David Greenwood, a BU biology professor who was instrumental in developing the proposal for the new graduate degree program. “We will now have the students and professors in-place to maximize that potential.”
With this new program, BU offers Master’s degrees in all Faculties and Schools including Rural Development, Education, Music, Psychiatric Nursing, and Science.
