BU Student Interns with German Disaster Agency

BRANDON, MB – A student from the Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies (ADES) program at Brandon University (BU), chosen to attend an international crisis management conference, will be pursuing an internship in Germany.

Samantha Durin, BU ADES student (web)Samantha Durnin, originally from Portage la Prairie, is taking part this week in the 5th Annual BBK Summer Academy, an emergency management conference organized by the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (Bundesamt für Bevölkerungsschutz und Katastrophenhilfe BBK). Based on her application which included school marks, recommendation from her professor and a letter of motivation, Samantha was asked to remain with the Academy for a six week internship.

“This is a great opportunity,” says Samantha. “I would like to work for the United Nations or European Community in disaster assistance, helping with response and recovery. The chance to get to know the German system and network with experts from around the globe will be invaluable.”

ADES professor John Lindsay says Samantha’s accomplishments are high praise to both her academic work and the BU’s ADES program, one of only two offered in Canada.

“Our program is unique response to society’s developing need for emergency management,” says Lindsay. “Students like Samantha are prepared through classroom time and practical assignments to step into roles in government, NGOs, volunteer agencies and the military.”
