BU Partners in Tuition Waiver Program

BRANDON, MB – Children raised in Manitoba’s child welfare system now have increased opportunities for post-secondary education through the recently announced Tuition Waiver Program partnership involving Brandon University (BU), Assiniboine Community College (ACC) and the four Child and Family Services Authorities of Manitoba.

“We are very excited and cannot thank BU and ACC enough for becoming part of this wonderful initiative,” said Dave McGregor, Chief Executive Officer of Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba (CFS Western). “This partnership can help change the outcomes for youth in care by removing barriers and creating opportunities for these young people to access a post-secondary education.”

There are more than 9,500 children and youth in care in Manitoba with the majority being First Nations and Métis. Fewer than 5% are estimated to pursue post-secondary education because of a lack of finances, housing and support. Transitioning from youth in care to young adult is another potential barrier.

“Brandon University is pleased to be a partner is this very important initiative,” said BU President and Vice-Chancellor Deborah Poff. “University education is not only good in itself but it is also a mechanism for social and economic mobility. We welcome these students and will do our utmost to support them in their studies and future goals.”

Mark Frison, ACC President, said, “We strongly believe in this initiative and are proud to partner with Child and Family Services in order to further develop this program throughout the Westman area. We’re proud to help open our doors to these students to further their post-secondary education as our mission is to transform lives and strengthen Manitoba through applied education and research.”
