BRANDON, MB – A Brandon University (BU) professor is researching children’s oral and written language development, with the goal of creating new teaching methods that incorporate cultural factors into Canadian classrooms.
Donna Forsyth, BU Faculty of Education, will work with educators in northern and rural Manitoba school divisions as part of a $2.8 million nation-wide project which brings together the University of Toronto as the lead institution and BU and the University of Saskatchewan as partner institutions to address this important research topic. The project is funded through a Partnership Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
“The cultural identity is essential in a child’s academic achievements,” says Forsyth, a former curriculum consultant with the provincial government, “but often unrecognized in classroom instruction. This is vitally important in Manitoba, because of our growing cultural diversity.”
Forsyth has a background in oral language and early literacy development. Dr. Karen Rempel, Director of Brandon University Centre for Aboriginal and Rural Education Studies (BU CARES), is also a collaborator in the project.
Dr. Deborah Poff, President and Vice-Chancellor of BU noted, “The SSHRC Partnership Grants are a wonderful opportunity for scholars across Canada to work collaboratively and optimize the richness of results from different regions and communities. Having Professor Forsyth as a co-investigator in this project will bring her expertise and her perspective to this critically important area of study.”
