Brandon, MB — Brandon University has received $90,000 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Funding for this three-year project entitled “Tourism Market Development and Impact Assessment” is from the SSHRC’s Aid to Small Universities (ASU) Program and will be headed by Dr. Derrek Eberts, Associate Professor in the Department of Geography.

“The funding will build research capacity in Brandon University’s Tourism Research Centre by facilitating academic linkages between the University, the Province of Manitoba, and the regions that Travel Manitoba has identified in its 2010 Business Plan for marketing and expansion,” said Dr. Eberts.

The project has three priorities. The first is research partnerships exploring market development. Next is research partnerships assessing tourism’s impacts. Finally, the study will also look into the mechanisms for dissemination of the research’s results, via the Tourism Research Centre. The funding received from SSHRC will also be used to bring experts to Brandon for lectures and workshops to foster a greater understanding of opportunities in Travel Manitoba’s target markets. As well, researchers from Brandon University will be able to engage in projects evaluating tourism’s impacts in Travel Manitoba’s target regions.

“These activities will enhance the capacity of Brandon University’s Tourism Research Centre to inform tourism-related public policy development in Manitoba,” said Dr. Eberts.
