BRANDON, MB – Brandon University (BU) students and researchers are set to display a collection of photographs that show unique interpretations of Aboriginal youth leadership in Success through Our Eyes: A Photovoice Exhibit. The exhibit is part of an overall youth success project to tell the story of First Nations, Métis and Inuit young people across Manitoba.

Blyss Pickering is a passionate advocate for nature and protecting the vital relationships between the urban and natural environments that surround us. She studies the ecological health of riparian forests around the City of Brandon, and is adding to both the social and scientific knowledge associated with municipal development in these areas.

After two weeks of learning, lectures, and field trips, nearly a dozen faculty listened to graduate students presenting their comparative research proposals. Their short summaries helped reveal how students apply what they experienced across rural Ireland.
Rural Ireland is not alone in sharing local artisans with the world. Economusee is a growing network of agencies supporting unique local experiences in rural areas.
Over the course of a dozen days, students heard successful rural development reaches beyond an agricultural sector. While progressive agricultural policy includes and promotes small farmers and value-add niche processing and products, in Europe as in Canada off farm incomes remain a necessity for family survival.
Business growth, improving local health services, and retaining youth and newcomers are all critical challenges facing rural areas on both sides of the Atlantic. While the size of the challenges varied, the need and urgency of response were consistently mentioned.
BRANDON, MB – Brandon University (BU) has won a Silver PRIX D’EXCELLENCE award, in the Best Institutional Branding category, at the Canadian Council for Advancement of Education (CCAE) Conference in Montreal, QC.

The PRIX D’EXCELLENCE is the annual awards program of the CCAE, recognizing outstanding achievements in communications and marketing, alumni relations, fundraising, external relations and student recruitment. BU’s award was in recognition of their submission, “Brandon University: A New Visual Identity”, which highlighted its recent rebrand.
Throughout rural areas in Ireland, 2014 legislation requires local governments to team up with economic and social development agencies. The steering committee of this new Local Community Development Committee is dominated by citizens and some elected officials.
