A Brandon University (BU) School of Music faculty member has been nominated for a 2026 Western Canadian Music Award.

Luis Ramirez, an Assistant Professor of Music Theory as well as a BU alumnus, is one of five nominees for Classical Composer of the Year for his work Leaven, performed by the string quartet Atlys. The awards will be presented at BreakOut West, a conference and music festival taking place from September 30 to October 4 in Victoria.

More from Ramirez, and a recording of Leaven, can be found in a feature by Winnipeg radio station Classic 107.
