Brandon University is expanding its global reach with the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding with Juntendo University in Tokyo, Japan — marking BU’s first formal institutional partnership in the country.

The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration between the two institutions, including opportunities for student and faculty exchange, joint research initiatives, and the sharing of academic resources and expertise.

“This is an exciting milestone for Brandon University,” said David Rowland, Director of the Office of International Activities. “As our first MOU in Japan, we hope this partnership will open the door to further collaborations and inspire additional departments to explore opportunities in the region.”

The partnership with Juntendo University aligns closely with Brandon University’s strengths in applied disaster and emergency studies (ADES), an area where Japan is widely recognized as a global leader.

“Japan is one of the leading countries in disaster and emergency management,” said Dr. Etsuko Yasui, chair of BU’s ADES program. “The country has been very active in promoting disaster and emergency education and training across public schools, communities, and institutions at all levels.”

The collaboration is expected to provide valuable opportunities for students and researchers from both institutions to engage in international learning and applied research, particularly in areas related to emergency management, public safety, and community resilience. One of the first initiatives is expected to be opportunities for student exchanges.

The partnership was facilitated in part through connections with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service in Tokyo and the Embassy of Canada to Japan, highlighting the importance of international relationships in advancing academic collaboration.

Under the terms of the MOU, both universities will work together to develop specific initiatives, including exchange programs and joint academic activities, with the goal of strengthening ties between Canada and Japan in higher education.
