BU welcomes back distinguished alumna Carolyn Rogers for inspiring student visit

Brandon University students had a unique opportunity to connect with one of Canada’s leading economic voices when alumna Carolyn Rogers, Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, returned to campus late last month.

While in Brandon to speak at the Brandon Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook Luncheon on March 26, Rogers also generously made time to meet directly with BU students in an intimate, interactive session. The visit highlighted both her commitment to supporting the next generation and the strength of a Brandon University education.

“Opportunities like this often grow out of strong faculty connections with alumni,” said BU President Cristine Bovis-Cnossen in a message to the campus community. “It’s a great reminder of the possibilities that can come from inviting former students back to share their journeys and inspire the next generation.”

The student-focused event, hosted in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, provided attendees with rare, direct access to a national leader. Through an open Q&A format, students were able to engage personally, ask questions, and gain insight from Rogers’ experience.

For many, the impact was immediate and meaningful.

“It was very insightful, very eye-opening,” said Edward Español, a third-year economics student. “It made me feel more relaxed, less scared, less afraid of what’s to come in my career. It’s incredible.”

Español added that the experience helped him rethink his future path and better understand the range of opportunities available in his field.

Students also emphasized how significant it was to see a BU graduate reach such heights.

“Having the speaker today be from Brandon University shows that it is possible to reach quite far,” said Maya Linov, who studies Sociology and English. “It just shows how much more is possible; you absolutely have the chance to reach for the stars.”

Linov highlighted the value of the personal interaction Rogers offered.

“Just being given that opportunity is something we’re very fortunate to have here,” she said. “Connecting with somebody so high up, and having them take the time to answer questions and talk with students individually, it’s really amazing.”

For Business Administration student Ben Amey, the session stood out for its accessibility and relevance.

“Being able to gain knowledge from someone who has so much experience, and ask questions that we wouldn’t be able to otherwise, is huge,” he said. “No matter what you’re interested in, you’re able to find out the knowledge you want.”

The visit was made possible through the leadership of Brandon University’s Department of Business Administration, which sponsored the Chamber luncheon and helped coordinate Rogers’ time on campus. The department has long maintained strong ties with alumni and the broader business community, creating opportunities that connect classroom learning with real-world experience.

Over the past 25 years, Business Administration has grown into one of BU’s largest departments, with graduates pursuing successful careers across industries including accounting, law, government, and human resources. Events like this reinforce the department’s commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers and helping them realize their full potential.

Rogers’ visit served as a powerful example of what BU graduates can achieve locally, nationally, and beyond, while highlighting the value of the BU alumni network.

Above all, students left inspired.

“These are life-changing opportunities,” Linov said. “Something you really would not be able to get every other day.”
